Anthropic sued by Elvis Presley rights holders for $48.6 million

Rights holders of Elvis Presley’s musical catalog have filed a lawsuit against Anthropic, the developer of the Claude AI assistant, in a California federal court. The plaintiffs, including Authentic Brands Group, Raleigh Music Publishing, and Abilene Music, allege that Anthropic used 274 copyrighted songs to train its AI models without authorization or compensation.

The legal action, filed in the Northern District of California, seeks damages ranging from approximately $41 million to $48.6 million. The plaintiffs are requesting $150,000 for each of the 274 songs involved. The complaint alleges that Anthropic bypassed digital rights management (DRM) protections and altered copyright management information to facilitate the unauthorized use of the material.

Beyond the training phase, the lawsuit claims that Claude can generate lyrics and content that are substantially similar to Presley’s original works. This follows other legal challenges against Anthropic from entities such as Universal Music Group and Reservoir regarding the use of protected musical works and lyrics. Anthropic has denied the accusations and stated its intention to defend itself in court.
