Anthropic sued over misleading Claude Max usage limits

A Washington, D.C. resident, Karl Kahn, filed a federal lawsuit against Anthropic alleging that the company's Claude Max 5x and Max 20x subscription plans provide far less usage than advertised. The plans, priced at $100 and $200 per month, promise five‑ and twenty‑fold higher usage caps than the base Claude Pro tier, yet users report hitting weekly limits early and receiving unclear, variable caps. The suit seeks class‑action status on behalf of other U.S. customers who purchased the plans since they launched last April. Anthropic has declined to comment.

The lawsuit highlights a broader challenge in the AI industry, where providers must balance rising compute costs with consumer expectations. Similar concerns have arisen with other AI services, leading to daily caps and throttling across the sector. Competitors such as Google, OpenAI and Meta are also adjusting pricing and subscription models in response to heavy‑user demand and cost pressures.
