Anthropic overtakes OpenAI in quarterly revenue as enterprise AI demand surges

Anthropic has overtaken OpenAI in quarterly revenue for the first time, signaling a shift in the artificial intelligence market toward enterprise-focused services. In the second quarter of 2026, Anthropic reported revenue of $11.6 billion, more than doubling its previous quarter's figures. This growth is attributed largely to the success of its coding tool, Claude Code, which has seen significant adoption among enterprise clients.

In contrast, OpenAI reported an 18% increase in revenue, reaching $6.7 billion. While this represents growth, it fell short of some investor expectations. Furthermore, OpenAI’s operational losses expanded from $9.3 billion in the first quarter to $12.3 billion in the second quarter, driven by high costs associated with model development and infrastructure.

The divergence in financial performance highlights different business models: OpenAI has focused on consumer-facing applications like ChatGPT, while Anthropic has prioritized the B2B market through API calls and specialized developer tools. These results come as both companies face scrutiny ahead of potential initial public offerings (IPOs), with Anthropic’s rapid growth fueling speculation regarding its future valuation.
