Anthropic to allocate 5% of shares to new public benefit fund

Anthropic, the developer of the Claude AI model, has announced plans to establish the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund. Subject to shareholder approval, the company intends to allocate 5% of its shares to this new entity to address the societal impacts of artificial intelligence, specifically focusing on labor market disruptions and job displacement.

The fund will be structured as a wholly owned limited liability company (LLC) rather than a tax-exempt non-profit, a move intended to provide flexibility in distributing resources. This may include large donations to non-profit organizations or direct financial assistance to specific populations affected by AI technology. Anthropic has already committed $200 million to research the effects of AI on the workforce.

The share allocation is designed to scale with the company's growth; the board may grant an additional 2% in shares for every 50% increase in company valuation above an undisclosed baseline. Anthropic has explicitly stated that the fund's assets will not be used for political lobbying or donations in the United States or abroad.

This announcement comes as Anthropic prepares for a potential initial public offering (IPO), which some reports suggest could value the company between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion. The initiative has drawn a response from Elon Musk, who suggested that shares should be distributed directly to the public and pledged to give one SpaceX share to every child in America next year.
