Anthropic to implement invisible watermarks on Claude AI text

Anthropic has announced that all text generated by its Claude models will feature invisible, machine-readable watermarks. This move is intended to comply with transparency mandates in the European Union’s AI Act, specifically Article 50(2), which requires the identification of synthetic content. Anthropic is among approximately 200 companies, including OpenAI, Meta, and Microsoft, that have signed a Code of Practice regarding AI-generated content.

The watermarking technology utilizes statistical word-selection tagging. This method alters how the model chooses synonymous words during generation, creating a distinct statistical signature that remains invisible to human readers but can be verified with a detection key. Anthropic states this will not impact the quality, creativity, or readability of the output.

However, the implementation faces practical challenges. The watermark cannot differentiate between content entirely produced by AI and human-authored work that used Claude for minor editing or structural assistance. Additionally, there are concerns regarding the ability of malicious actors to bypass these markers through strategic paraphrasing, and debates over how such signals might affect digital authorship and content reputation.
