Singapore expands AI footprint as Anthropic opens regional office

Singapore is rapidly advancing its artificial intelligence capabilities through significant corporate expansion, massive venture capital inflows, and government-led workforce initiatives. Anthropic has announced it will open a Singapore office this October, marking its first location in Southeast Asia. The move is driven by high demand for its Claude AI model; Singapore currently ranks second globally for Claude usage per capita. Dale Finlay, formerly of Google Cloud, has been appointed General Manager of ASEAN to lead regional operations.

Financially, Singapore-based AI companies have secured US$13.5 billion in venture capital funding as of September 2026, establishing the city-state as a dominant regional tech hub. This contrasts with neighboring countries like Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand, which combined raised less than US$40 million.

To support this growth, the Skills and Workforce Development Agency (SWDA) has launched over 200 AI courses and a SkillsFuture AI Subscription offering six-month access to premium tools. Additionally, the upcoming Tech Week Singapore 2026 will gather over 600 industry leaders to discuss AI infrastructure and cybersecurity.
