Anthropic to pay $1.5 billion to settle AI copyright lawsuit

Anthropic has agreed to a $1.5 billion settlement in a class-action lawsuit in the United States regarding the unauthorized use of copyrighted books to train its AI models, including the Claude chatbot. The settlement involves approximately 500,000 titles, with compensation set at roughly $3,000 per work.

The Literary Translation Institute of Korea (LTI Korea) has identified 21 works by South Korean authors included in the settlement list. Notable authors affected include Nobel laureate Han Kang, as well as Hwang Sok Yong, Shin Kyung Sook, and Kim Ae Ran. Authors can receive compensation by participating in the established claims process.

In response to the settlement, the Korea Publishers Association has called for greater transparency from AI companies regarding the use of copyrighted materials. The association emphasized the need for mechanisms that allow authors and publishers to know how, when, and by which AI systems their works are being utilized to ensure fair protection of intellectual property rights.
