Anthropic Valuation Tops OpenAI, Sparking AI Regulation Push and SoftBank Loan Review
Anthropic is nearing a $1 trillion valuation, overtaking OpenAI’s $862 billion worth to become the world’s most valuable AI firm. CEO Dario Amodei announced a policy framework calling for government authority to block or deter deployment of frontier large‑language models deemed too risky, mandatory technical testing and audits, workplace protections against AI‑related job loss, coordination among allied democracies, and limits on the use of such models in warfare and domestic surveillance.
The valuation shift has prompted SoftBank Group to reassess a planned $10 billion margin loan that was to be secured by its stake in OpenAI. Following the news, SoftBank shares fell and the loan’s collateral value was deemed to have deteriorated, leading lenders to reconsider terms and explore alternative financing structures. The episode reflects broader volatility in AI‑related asset values and heightened scrutiny of equity‑backed borrowing in the sector.
