Anthropic warns of AI worms capable of self-replicating across IoT devices

Anthropic has issued a warning regarding the potential emergence of “AI worms,” which are malicious programs capable of autonomously self-replicating across the internet. Researchers demonstrated that small AI models could potentially hijack inexpensive Internet of Things (IoT) devices, such as smart TVs, ovens, and security cameras, to create distributed botnets.

In controlled experiments, Anthropic used Google’s Gemma4-26B-A4B model to successfully replicate across a network of 15 low-cost Android TV boxes. While current models still struggle to complete the entire replication chain reliably, medium-sized models with 30 billion parameters or fewer are already capable of performing many individual stages of the process. Anthropic projects that models may reach full autonomous replication capability by the end of 2026.

Demis Hassabis, co-founder of Google DeepMind, also warned that AI-driven security incidents could become significantly more severe starting in 2027. He urged governments and tech companies to strengthen protections against autonomous agents that can navigate the web and execute complex tasks with minimal human intervention. Experts note that such attacks would be difficult to stop because they lack a centralized point of intervention.
