Anthropic's Claude AI discovers novel ART enzyme system

Anthropic has announced that its Claude AI model has discovered a previously unknown enzyme system, named Array-Associated Reverse Transcriptases (ART), found within the DNA of bacteriophages. The discovery was made using approximately 950 AI agents that processed 210 million tokens over a 21-hour period, a task that would typically take human researchers weeks or months.

The ART system features a structure of repeating DNA sequences that resembles the CRISPR gene-editing mechanism. While the precise biological function and biotechnological utility of ART are not yet fully understood, CEO Dario Amodei noted that such programmable systems have historically revolutionized medicine. The findings have been released as a pre-print and have not yet undergone peer review.

This breakthrough is the first result from Anthropic’s newly established biological laboratory in the San Francisco Bay Area. The facility operates under BSL-1 and BSL-2 biosafety protocols and focuses on fundamental biology research. While the AI performed the heavy computational analysis and hypothesis generation, all physical laboratory experiments are conducted by human scientists.
