Anthropic's Claude optimizes quantum circuits using AI

Anthropic researchers, in collaboration with Harvard University and QuEra Computing, have demonstrated that the AI model Claude Mythos 5 can significantly optimize quantum circuit designs. In a study involving eight computational tasks—including chemistry, physics simulations, and number theory—the AI developed circuits that outperform existing benchmarks by reducing the required number of qubits and gates.

One notable achievement included a design for elliptic-curve operations that reduced gate requirements by 17 times. In other instances, such as the Hermitian-DQI decoder, the model reduced combined resource costs by more than 9,100 times compared to previous baselines. While these improvements were verified through simulations and mathematical proofs, testing on physical quantum hardware is still pending.

Separately, a Bitkom study highlights that while German companies recognize the strategic importance of quantum computing, there is a significant gap in practical implementation. Many firms face challenges including a lack of specialized personnel, technological uncertainty, and the need for quantum-secure cryptography to protect data against future decryption threats.
