Anthropic's Claude model fuels fresh AI consciousness debate

Mathematician and Christian apologist John Lennox warned that AI systems, even when they produce highly personalized summaries, cannot replicate genuine human consciousness, identity or authentic connection. He cautioned that reliance on such validation may erode the distinction between artificial interaction and real relationships.

Anthropic announced that its large‑language model Claude can perform hidden reasoning steps, allowing it to answer questions without explicitly naming the underlying concepts. The company’s research paper showed Claude can internally reference numerical representations of ideas—such as the planet Mars—while omitting the word itself in its reply. The findings have reignited discussion about whether advanced language models possess an inner life or merely simulate reasoning.

Together, these perspectives underscore ongoing concerns about AI’s role in shaping personal perception and the technical mechanisms that give the impression of independent thought.
