Antibiotic‑Resistant Gonorrhea Cases Surge Across Europe
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) reports a rapid rise in gonorrhea infections that are resistant to the antibiotics ceftriaxone and azithromycin. In 2024, more than 106,000 confirmed cases were recorded in Europe – the highest number since surveillance began in 2009 – representing a 303 % increase over the past decade.
Local transmission is now documented, shifting the threat from travelers returning from Southeast Asia to community spread within European nations. The United Kingdom, France, Germany and Sweden report the steepest increases, while other countries note isolated cases but warn of swift escalation. Experts stress that resistant strains could limit treatment options and lead to serious complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy and infertility.
ECDC advises heightened caution for individuals engaging in new sexual contacts abroad, especially in high‑risk destinations like Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia and Vietnam, and calls for reinforced testing and surveillance across the continent.
