Antigua and Barbuda considers diesel stockpiling to secure supply

Prime Minister Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda has indicated that the government may consider stockpiling diesel to mitigate potential supply disruptions. The proposal involves purchasing enough fuel to cover several months of demand, utilizing the nation's existing storage capacity.

Browne noted that the decision involves a financial risk, as purchasing large quantities at current high prices could prevent the government from passing future savings to consumers if market prices drop. However, he stated, “We’re better off having diesel at a high price than having none,” citing concerns regarding potential restrictions on diesel exports from the United States.

Currently, the government is using subsidies to shield consumers from rising diesel costs. Browne has urged citizens to reduce fuel consumption to alleviate pressure on both households and the state.
