Antigua and Barbuda inflation rises as fuel and transport costs surge

Antigua and Barbuda is experiencing rising inflationary pressures, with consumer prices increasing by 7% over the 12 months ending September 2026. This surge is primarily driven by non-food sectors, including a 23.1% rise in communication costs, a 12.6% increase in housing and utilities, and a 12% rise in transport costs.

Gasoline prices have seen significant volatility, rising for the second time in a month to EC$17.99 per gallon as of October 1. This follows a previous increase in September, bringing the total rise since September to EC$3.49 per gallon. Prime Minister Gaston Browne attributed the fuel price hikes to rising international energy costs and global geopolitical instability, specifically citing tensions between the USA and Iran.

While transportation and housing costs have climbed, there has been some relief in the food sector. The Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages Index declined by 1%, supported by price drops in vegetables and meat products. However, the overall Consumer Price Index remains elevated due to the sharp increases in essential services and fuel.
