Antigua and Barbuda opposition faces scrutiny over leadership and unity
Political tensions are rising in Antigua and Barbuda as concerns grow regarding the strength of the nation's democratic oversight. A local citizen has publicly criticized the current administration for alleged nepotism and questionable dealings, while simultaneously labeling the political opposition as an “embarrassment” due to internal instability and leadership challenges.
Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle of the United Progressive Party (UPP) has addressed criticisms regarding internal infighting and a lack of support for his leadership. Pringle acknowledged that while the party faces organizational challenges and disagreements among members, the UPP is focused on developing a credible alternative government.
To demonstrate its viability, Pringle highlighted several proposed relief policies, including reducing vehicle licensing fees by 50%, removing certain taxes on water pumps and tanks to increase affordability, and linking local fuel prices to international market fluctuations to ensure consumer savings are passed on when global costs drop.
