Antigua and Barbuda partners with Octopus Energy on renewable energy project

The Government of Antigua and Barbuda and Octopus Energy have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore renewable energy solutions aimed at reducing the nation's dependence on imported fossil fuels. Announced during New York Climate Week, the partnership will investigate the integration of solar power, battery storage, electric vehicles, and flexible electricity demand.

A central component of the exploration is Virtual Power Plant (VPP) technology. This approach connects distributed resources, such as domestic batteries and solar systems, to allow them to be managed collectively to support the national electricity grid. The initiative seeks to improve grid resilience and lower energy costs for citizens.

Antigua and Barbuda currently faces high energy costs due to fossil fuel imports, which account for more than 10% of the country's GDP. The partnership supports the nation's goal to generate 86% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. The project is currently in an exploratory stage to develop an implementable plan.
