Antigua and Barbuda PM announces reef expansion and social initiatives

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has outlined several domestic initiatives for Antigua and Barbuda focused on environmental management, social welfare, and economic development.

Regarding marine conservation, the government plans to expand its artificial reef programme to Fort James and Ffryes beaches. These reefs are intended to increase marine life and support food security, with potential AI monitoring technology to track habitats. Browne also defended the use of dredge spoil at Peace Beach, stating that pumping the material to the coastline instead of dumping it at sea saved the government millions of dollars.

On social issues, Browne called on the private sector to provide part-time and summer employment to students from impoverished families to help prevent crime and violence. Additionally, the administration is preparing to implement tougher enforcement measures against indiscriminate littering, unauthorized roadside vending, and derelict vehicles to improve the nation’s environment and public culture.
