Antigua and Barbuda police raise concerns over bail for violent crime suspects

Senior police officials in Antigua and Barbuda have expressed significant concern regarding the judicial practice of granting bail to individuals accused of serious violent crimes, including murder and shootings, while their cases are still pending in court.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Lisborn Michael noted that these decisions have caused distress for victims’ families and frustration among officers who conduct lengthy investigations. Michael highlighted specific instances, such as a suspect accused of a 2024 murder being released on bail, and defendants in a West Bus Station shooting case who were later convicted of robbery in separate matters.

While acknowledging that bail is a judicial decision and that defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty, Michael emphasized the need for the justice system to prioritize public safety. He reported that police frequently encounter suspects committing additional crimes while out on bail or shortly after completing previous sentences.
