China hands over EC$50 million Pelican Court housing project in Antigua and Barbuda
China has officially handed over Pelican Court, a 150-unit condominium development in Antigua and Barbuda, following the completion of the EC$50 million project. The development, located in the Point community, was funded through a Chinese government grant rather than a loan and is intended to improve living conditions for former residents of Booby Alley.
During the handover ceremony, Chinese Ambassador Jiang Wei expressed China’s willingness to undertake further public welfare initiatives to support the country’s sustained development. She described the housing project as a gift to the nation ahead of its 45th anniversary of independence. The construction utilized modern Chinese technology and building standards adapted to local needs.
Antigua and Barbuda Housing Minister Maria Browne characterized China as a dependable partner, noting that the grant-funded project demonstrates a relationship built on reliability and respect. She emphasized that the partnership is reciprocal, noting the country’s commitment to the One-China policy and the significant benefits provided by Chinese assistance in areas such as ports and airport infrastructure.
