Antigua Ministry criticizes unauthorized Jennings Secondary lockdown drill
The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology in Antigua and Barbuda has issued a clarification regarding an unauthorized school simulation exercise conducted at Jennings Secondary School on October 2, 2026. The Ministry stated that the drill, which involved a masked male carrying what appeared to be a rifle and caused students to run and scream, was organized by the school without official permission or prior knowledge from the Ministry.
The Ministry apologized to parents and the public for the alarm and panic caused by the uncoordinated exercise. While acknowledging the importance of emergency drills, officials emphasized that such activities must receive prior approval and involve clear communication to prevent undue distress.
In contrast to the Ministry’s criticism, public reaction on social media has shown significant support for the school. Many citizens defended the decision to conduct a realistic drill, arguing that proactive preparedness is essential given local security concerns and that genuine emergencies do not provide advance notice.
