Antioquia Governor blames Coosalud for infant death
The Governor of Antioquia, Andrés Julián Rendón, has publicly criticized the healthcare provider Coosalud following the death of a three-month-old infant, Juan José Barroso Betín.
The infant, from Nechí, died in a clinic in Montería while awaiting transfer to a more complex medical facility capable of providing ECMO life support for a severe respiratory infection. Governor Rendón described the actions of the EPS as “tremenda y dolorosamente negligente” (tremendously and painfully negligent), noting that despite efforts by the Governor's office and the National Superintendency of Health to secure a transfer to Bogotá, the relocation never occurred.
Coosalud provided a differing account, stating they had been searching for a suitable institution since September 11. The provider emphasized that the infant's clinical state was critical, making any transfer a high-risk procedure.
