Milan Rabbi assaulted at bus stop; three suspects detained
A rabbi was physically assaulted while waiting for a bus in the Bande Nere area of Milan on September 16. The victim, identified as Rabbi Tzemach Mizrachi, was surrounded by three individuals who insulted him, struck him with punches and kicks, spat on him, and forcibly removed his head covering.
Despite the violence, the rabbi managed to use his smartphone to photograph and film the attackers as they fled toward a nearby metro station. This footage, along with surveillance video, allowed police to quickly identify and locate the suspects. Authorities have detained three young men of North African origin; one 20-year-old Tunisian national has been arrested on charges of violence for religious motives, while two others face investigation.
The incident has drawn widespread condemnation from Italian political leaders, including Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who described the attack as a vile and unacceptable act of antisemitic hate. Walker Meghnagi, president of the Milanese Jewish community, characterized the assault as an unprecedented level of violence and highlighted the increasingly difficult climate for the community.
