Antisemitism in Germany forces Jewish residents to hide religious symbols
Jewish communities in Germany are facing increasing security challenges, with many individuals feeling compelled to hide religious symbols like the kippah or Star of David when in public. The presence of police vehicles, concrete barriers, and security cameras at synagogues and Jewish schools has become a normalized part of the urban landscape.
Some members of the community compare the current atmosphere of insecurity to the period preceding National Socialism, while others liken the erosion of state protection to the Middle Ages. The Research and Information Center on Antisemitism (Rias) documented 418 antisemitic incidents in Thuringia alone over the past year. These conditions have also influenced travel decisions, with some Israelis opting to avoid Germany and Western Europe due to safety concerns.
