Antiviral treatment reduces ICU risk for children with influenza

A nationwide study led by the University of Colorado Anschutz has found that antiviral treatment significantly improves outcomes for children hospitalized with influenza. Published in JAMA Pediatrics, the research analyzed more than 7,000 pediatric hospitalizations across 13 states over eight flu seasons using the CDC’s FluSurv-NET surveillance network.

The study found that children treated with oseltamivir had a 31% reduction in the risk of ICU admission and experienced shorter hospital stays compared to those who did not receive the medication. Notably, the research indicated that the benefits of oseltamivir can persist even if treatment is initiated more than 48 hours after the onset of symptoms.

Researchers noted that while national guidelines recommend antiviral use for suspected or confirmed influenza, actual usage among hospitalized children has declined in recent years. The findings emphasize the importance of adhering to treatment guidelines to reduce the burden on healthcare systems and improve patient outcomes.
