Antonio Guterres visits Pakistan to praise US-Iran mediation efforts

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is conducting a three-day official visit to Pakistan from October 6 to 8, 2026. During his stay in Islamabad, Guterres met with top Pakistani leadership, including President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.

Guterres praised Pakistan for its pivotal role in mediating between the United States and Iran. He credited Islamabad’s diplomatic efforts with facilitating the Islamabad memorandum of understanding, a subsequent ceasefire, and establishing a framework for future negotiations. He urged both nations to return to diplomacy and restore navigational freedoms in the Gulf, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz.

In recognition of his contributions to global peace and international diplomacy, President Zardari conferred the Nishan-e-Imtiaz, one of Pakistan’s highest civilian honors, upon Guterres.

Discussions during the visit also addressed regional security issues, including the situation in Palestine, Jammu and Kashmir, Afghanistan, and the Indus Waters Treaty. Guterres is also scheduled to visit the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) and the National Disaster Management Authority.
