UN Chief demands Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon amid Nabatieh escalation
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and demanded that Israel withdraw its forces from Lebanese territory following an escalation of military operations in southern Lebanon.
Expressing deep concern over the situation in the Nabatieh District, Guterres condemned the rising number of civilian casualties, including women and children, and the massive destruction caused by intensifying attacks. The UN has highlighted reports of Israeli strikes affecting hospitals, healthcare workers, and public institutions, alongside restrictions on humanitarian access.
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), approximately 20,000 people, or 5,000 families, have fled the Nabatieh District in the past week. UNIFIL reported significant activity, including 528 Israeli projectiles fired between Thursday and Monday.
Guterres urged all parties to respect Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity, emphasizing the need to fulfill obligations under Security Council Resolution 1701. He stressed that civilians and civilian objects must be protected at all times under international humanitarian law.
