António Guterres visits Pakistan to discuss climate, peacekeeping, and geopolitics
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres conducted an official visit to Pakistan, engaging in high-level discussions regarding climate change, geopolitics, and artificial intelligence. During a roundtable with the Pakistan Global Alumni Network in Islamabad, Guterres highlighted Pakistan’s significant contributions to international peacekeeping and its long-standing history of hosting millions of Afghan refugees.
Guterres addressed the disproportionate impact of the climate crisis on Pakistan, noting that while the country contributes less than one percent of global emissions, it remains among the most climate-exposed nations. He also emphasized the importance of Pakistan’s young population as a vital asset for future economic and social development.
In an address to the Foreign Service Academy, the Secretary-General praised Pakistan’s role in de-escalation and dialogue amidst global tensions. He specifically commended the country’s efforts in facilitating peace between the United States and Iran, and reaffirmed his recognition of Pakistan’s resilience in the face of terrorism and natural disasters.
