António Muchanga challenges Renamo expulsion in court

António Muchanga, a member of Mozambique’s main opposition party, Renamo, has announced his intention to legally contest his expulsion from the organization. Muchanga claims the disciplinary measure was taken without following proper procedures or granting him the right to a defense.

Following a session of the Renamo National Council, Muchanga stated that he was not notified of any disciplinary process and was not present to present his case. He described the party’s internal organs as “inoperative” and expressed a lack of confidence in internal mechanisms to resolve the conflict, opting instead for judicial recourse.

The expulsion was decided by 161 members of the National Council, with 13 votes against and seven abstentions. Muchanga defended his recent public actions as legitimate criticism of the party leadership, specifically targeting Renamo President Ossufo Momade for failing to address national issues such as insecurity, the rising cost of living, and medicine shortages.
