Colombia faces massive disaster recovery and emergency curfews
Colombia is facing a severe humanitarian and economic crisis following a catastrophic event on August 10 that has impacted 450 municipalities across 15 departments. Official reports indicate 289 deaths, 4,187 injuries, 143 people missing, and over 120,000 families affected. President Abelardo de la Espriella estimated that repairing damaged infrastructure and housing will require 30 trillion pesos. To manage recovery, the government has proposed the ‘Fondo Milagro’ to coordinate subsidies and housing plans, though officials emphasize the need for digital auditing to ensure transparency.
In response to seismic activity, Manizales has implemented a preventive curfew from midnight to 5:00 a.m. to facilitate emergency services. Authorized movement during this time is restricted to medical personnel, emergency responders, public utility workers, and security forces to ensure public safety and the continuity of essential services.
