Antoine Semenyo reaches World Cup with Ghana after non‑league rise

Antoine Semenyo, born in London to Ghanaian parents, endured multiple failed academy trials at Arsenal, Tottenham and Millwall before playing non‑league football and considering quitting. At 26 he secured a place in Ghana’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, featuring in the England‑Ghana group match.

His breakthrough came when former Leeds United and Forest Green Rovers manager David Hockaday spotted him at a trial at Bisham Abbey. Hockaday mentored the youngster, helped him sign for Bournemouth and praised his ambidextrous ability and resilience. The partnership is credited with turning Semenyo’s stalled career into a World Cup appearance for the West African nation.
