Anton Corbijn’s A Talent for Murder explores Patricia Highsmith’s legacy
Directed by Anton Corbijn, the film ‘A Talent for Murder’ serves as both a literary biopic and a mystery inspired by the works of Patricia Highsmith. Set in 1995, the story follows Edward Ridgeway (played by Alden Ehrenreich), an ambitious New York literary agent who travels to the Swiss Alps to meet the reclusive author.
Ridgeway’s mission is to secure a contract for a sixth installment in the iconic Tom Ripley series. However, Highsmith (portrayed by Helen Mirren) is resistant to the proposal. She challenges Ridgeway to assist her in crafting a perfect murder plot, leading to a psychological game where elements of his real life begin to blend with the fiction they are creating.
Written by Joanna Murray-Smith, who adapted her own play ‘Switzerland’ for the screen, the film shifts between literary drama and mystery. The production features Olivia Cooke as Clementine Harriet Balfour and draws thematic homages to Highsmith’s ‘Strangers on a Train’ through its opening sequences.
