Antonin Artaud’s Dark Prophetic Text Reissued in Italy
Two recent articles note the Italian re‑issue of Antonin Artaud’s obscure 1937 pamphlet Les nouvelles révélations de l’être. The work, written during Artaud’s confinement in psychiatric clinics in Rodez and Paris, presents an apocalyptic vision expressed through tarot imagery and a tone that condemns Western values. The new edition, published in Italy, brings the text back into public view and highlights its significance beyond the common focus on Artaud’s madness.
The pieces also critique the tendency to reduce Artaud to a “mad genius,” pointing out that his writings contain misogynistic, antisemitic, and pro‑Nazi passages that are often extracted to sensationalise his biography. By revisiting the full breadth of his output—from the 1940s drawings to his later poems—the re‑issue invites a reassessment of his influence on contemporary theatre, art and philosophy.
