Antonio Banderas calls 2017 heart attack the best thing that happened to him

Antonio Banderas revealed that a heart attack he suffered in January 2017 at his home in Surrey, England, became a turning point in his life. He was rushed to hospital, underwent emergency surgery and had three stents placed in his arteries. The actor said the close brush with death gave him “a crystal‑clear reminder of how stupid it is to waste time on things that don’t matter,” adding that it felt “like someone put glasses on me so I could see reality.”

The experience prompted Banderas to quit smoking, leave Hollywood and move back to his native Málaga, Spain. He now runs the Teatro Soho CaixaBank there and has invested in several local restaurants, describing food and gastronomy as “a culture.” He is also starring in the upcoming biopic “Tony,” in which he plays a chef who mentored a young Anthony Bourdain. Banderas concluded that people often live as if they will never die, while he now focuses on “the experience of living.”
