Antonio Biancardi, agricultural leader and Solana founder, dies at 77

Antonio Biancardi, a prominent Italian agricultural entrepreneur and former president of Confagricoltura Lombardia, has died at the age of 77.

Biancardi was a key figure in the Maccastorna region, where his family had been active in farming since the late 19th century. In 2005, he transformed the family business by focusing on the genetic selection of Limousine cattle, establishing the largest Limousine beef breeding operation in Europe with over 1,000 purebred animals. The business is currently managed by his sons, Matteo and Carlo.

Beyond livestock, Biancardi co-founded Solana in 2001, a tomato processing company that reached an annual capacity of approximately 200,000 tons, largely for export markets. He also implemented sustainable infrastructure, including a biogas plant in 2011 that uses processing waste to heat the local community. His economic contributions were noted in 2026 when Maccastorna ranked among the highest in Italy for average per capita income.

Throughout his career, Biancardi held leadership roles in Confagricoltura Lombardia and Assolombarda, receiving the ‘Gentiluomo dell’Agricoltura’ award in 2017.
