Guardia Civil General and Businessman found guilty in corruption case
A popular jury in Madrid has found retired Lieutenant General Pedro Vázquez Jarava and businessman Ángel Ramón Tejera de León, known as ‘Mon’, guilty of bribery in the ‘Caso Cuarteles’. The investigation revealed a corruption scheme involving the irregular awarding of 120 minor contracts for maintenance and renovation works across 13 Guardia Civil commands in Spain between 2008 and 2019.
The contracts, totaling approximately 3.3 million euros, were awarded to Tejera de León’s companies in exchange for bribes totaling around 40,000 euros. These benefits included cash payments, trips, hotel stays, and football tickets. The jury found that Vázquez Jarava used his strategic position in the Subdirectorate General of Support to influence the distribution of funds and recommend the contractor to various commands.
The Prosecution, the State Attorney, and various professional associations of the Guardia Civil have requested a one-year prison sentence for both defendants. The defense has announced its intention to appeal the verdict.
