Antonio Guiteras Thermoelectric Plant repairs to take at least 48 hours
Repairs at the Antonio Guiteras Thermoelectric Plant in Matanzas are expected to take at least 48 hours following a failure in the high-temperature reheater (RAT). Román Pérez Castañeda, the plant's general director, reported that workers have identified six defects in the area and are currently cutting and replacing damaged pipes.
Once the replacement is complete, crews must perform welding and conduct metallographic and hydraulic control tests. If these procedures are successful, the plant could restart as early as Friday, October 2. The facility disconnected from the national electrical grid late Sunday night after a sudden loss of water in the boiler.
Unlike previous incidents, the economizer was not damaged in this event. The plant, which has been in operation since 1988, is a critical component of Cuba's energy infrastructure due to its location in the western region where electrical demand is highest.
