Antonio Guterres calls for doubled efforts to limit global warming

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for a doubling of efforts to combat climate change following a report from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Guterres warned that the world is on track to exceed the 1.5°C warming threshold established by the 2015 Paris Agreement within the coming years.

Highlighting recent extreme heatwaves, devastating wildfires, and lethal floods in the Northern Hemisphere, Guterres stated that these events serve as a warning of future climate impacts. He emphasized that the fight to limit temperature increases is a struggle for humanity, noting that extreme weather is already occurring with greater intensity and frequency.

To mitigate the worst effects, Guterres urged global leaders to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, strengthen resilience, and improve adaptation. He stressed the importance of ensuring that if the 1.5°C limit is exceeded, the increase remains as small and as short-lived as possible.
