Antonio Guterres calls for UN Security Council reform

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for an urgent reform of the Security Council, citing paralysis caused by geopolitical divisions among major powers. Guterres noted that current power relations no longer reflect global realities and argued that some Council members violate the very international laws they are tasked with upholding.

Addressing the Middle East, Guterres emphasized that peace requires a two-state solution and called for an end to Israeli actions in the occupied Palestinian territories, including Gaza and the West Bank. He highlighted concerns regarding ethnic cleansing and gradual annexation in the region.

Regarding the conflict in Ukraine, the UN chief stressed the necessity of a ceasefire to prevent further devastating consequences for the global economy. He expressed readiness to facilitate trilateral peace talks at the UN General Assembly should the involved parties agree.
