Antonio Guterres warns of UN Security Council paralysis

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that the UN Security Council has been “virtually paralyzed” over the last decade due to deep geopolitical divides.

Guterres noted that the Council has demonstrated a complete inability to intervene effectively or create the necessary conditions to end various global conflicts. He specifically cited a series of vetoes regarding the conflict in Ukraine, as well as United States vetoes concerning Israel’s actions in the Middle East, particularly in the Gaza Strip, as examples of this institutional deadlock.
