Antonio José de Sucre triumphs at the Battle of Yaguachi

On August 19, 1821, the Battle of Yaguachi took place in the Guayas Province of present-day Ecuador. The engagement involved 1,200 troops from the Protectorate Division of Quito, led by General Antonio José de Sucre, against a royalist force of approximately 1,000 soldiers commanded by Colonel Francisco González.

Sucre had been dispatched by Simón Bolívar earlier that year to lead patriot troops between Popayán and Pasto to combat monarchist forces. Following the strategic decision by the population of Guayaquil to declare independence from Spain, Sucre moved to secure key territories to facilitate the advance toward Quito.
