Antonio Nariño Airport faces difficult landing conditions

The Antonio Nariño Airport in Chachagüí, Nariño, presents significant landing challenges due to its geographic location in the Andes Mountains. The airport is surrounded by mountains and canyons, featuring a runway built on a plateau near the Galeras Volcano, which reaches an altitude of approximately 4,276 meters.

These environmental factors and unpredictable weather conditions frequently complicate flight approaches. Recently, the delegation of the football club Deportivo Independiente Medellín experienced tension when their aircraft made three failed landing attempts at the terminal. The crew was forced to divert to Cali, Valle del Cauca, where the team stayed overnight before successfully landing in Nariño the following day.

Such incidents are not isolated, as commercial aircraft have historically had to abort approaches at this airport due to the complex terrain and meteorological conditions.
