Antonio Tajani faces backlash over remarks on women and attire
Italian Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani has sparked significant controversy following remarks regarding women and their attire. During a political gathering near Rome on September 18, Tajani used an analogy to defend the stability of his party, Forza Italia, comparing political choices to advice he would give his son regarding marriage.
He contrasted an attractive but potentially unfaithful woman with a less striking but more reliable woman, suggesting the latter might be a ‘good mother of the family.’ Tajani further implied that a more serious woman might wear a longer skirt, linking clothing length to respectability and character.
The comments triggered a massive backlash on social media, where users utilized artificial intelligence to create viral images of Tajani wearing skirts and dresses. In response to his remarks, many women posted photos of themselves in short skirts to protest the idea that clothing dictates dignity or reliability. The debate has since moved into the Italian Parliament, drawing criticism from opposition figures such as Matteo Renzi and former Turin mayor Chiara Appendino.
