Italy strengthens strategic ties with Germany and DR Congo
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani held high-level meetings to strengthen bilateral ties with both Germany and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
In discussions with German official Johann Wadephul, the focus was on reinforcing the strategic partnership between Italy and Germany, which share a €160 billion trade exchange. The leaders addressed European competitiveness, energy costs, migration management, and stability in the Western Balkans, Ukraine, and the Middle East. Tajani also showcased the newly established cyber room at the Farnesina.
Regarding the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tajani met with Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner to revitalize political and economic cooperation. As a priority country under Italy’s Mattei Plan, the DRC and Italy agreed to establish a technical working group and a political agreement concerning critical raw materials.
To support African interests at the United Nations, the two nations will create a permanent consultation mechanism during the DRC’s term on the UN Security Council (2026-2027). The meeting also addressed the humanitarian crisis in the Great Lakes region and honored the memory of Ambassador Luca Attanasio and others.
