Antonio Tajani calls for judicial rigor in arrest validations

Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has sparked a political confrontation with the judiciary by calling for greater rigor in the validation of arrests. Speaking at the ‘Villaggio della legalità’ in Rome, Tajani criticized what he termed ‘forgiving’ magistrates, noting that individuals arrested in flagrante delicto are often released only to commit crimes again the following day. He suggested that a more stringent approach is necessary to provide a signal to citizens and to ensure that criminal leaders do not act with impunity, using the phrase ‘hit one to educate a hundred.’

Tajani clarified on social media that he is not asking for the law to be disregarded, but for it to be applied fully to prevent the perception of impunity, which he claims demotivates law enforcement and increases social alarm. He specifically cited recent incidents in Turin as examples of this issue.

The National Association of Magistrates (ANM) responded sharply, stating they were ‘aghast’ by his remarks. The ANM argued that Tajani’s logic is contrary to the rule of law and warned that security should not be achieved by shifting responsibility onto the judiciary. The association emphasized that justice must remain an impartial application of the law and cannot be used as an instrument of intimidation.
