Antonis Nikopolidis recalls relationship with Giorgos Vardinogiannis

Footballer Antonis Nikopolidis has shared reflections on his relationship with the late Giorgos Vardinogiannis, the long-standing former president of Panathinaikos. In an interview with Post Game Gazzetta Magazine, Nikopolidis recounted a meeting in January 2004, just months before his transfer to Olympiacos.

Nikopolidis recalled Vardinogiannis telling him, ‘Antoni, you didn’t find it, did you? I don’t know why, I’m not involved in these things. I hope you don’t do something stupid and do what it sounds like...’. Despite the eventual move to Olympiacos in May 2004, Nikopolidis expressed high regard for Vardinogiannis, describing him as a demanding and tough negotiator but a fair person.

He further praised Vardinogiannis’s legacy in Greek football, specifically highlighting his support for young athletes through the Paiania sports center, which Nikopolidis noted was a vital resource for many players.
