Antonis Samaras' moves spark tensions within Greece's New Democracy

Former prime minister Antonis Samaras is intensifying efforts to establish a new political party, meeting with three incumbent New Democracy (ND) MPs and expanding his contacts inside the ruling party. The gatherings, held in a well‑known restaurant in Pagrati, are seen as a step toward announcing his new party initiative.

Government Vice‑President Kostis Chatzidakis responded, asserting that “anyone who forms a party will not have much appeal” and emphasizing that the ND electorate remains loyal to the party itself. Chatzidakis also criticised left‑wing parties after a recent attack on ND officials, calling for equal treatment under the law.

The developments have heightened nervousness within the ND‑led government camp as Samaras’ actions are viewed as a potential challenge to the party's unity ahead of future elections.
