Ukrainian Antonov AN-124 cargo plane visits CFB Comox
An Antonov AN-124-100M, a massive Ukrainian cargo aircraft, recently landed at CFB Comox on Vancouver Island. The aircraft, which features a 73-metre wingspan and a 120,000 kg freight payload capacity, is one of the largest of its kind.
Owned by the state-owned Antonov Airlines, the aircraft is named ‘Mykolaiv’ as part of the company’s ‘Be Brave Like Ukraine’ campaign, honoring cities that have resisted Russian occupation. The plane arrived at the airfield on October 12 and departed at 3:30 a.m. on October 13. It is believed the Royal Canadian Air Force may have contracted the aircraft to assist with the transport of large cargo or personnel while other military assets were deployed elsewhere.
