Antártida film explores sexual violence in Antarctic isolation

The psychological thriller ‘Antártida’, directed by Bruno Safadi, is set to premiere in Brazilian cinemas following its screening at the 54th Gramado Film Festival. The film follows Inês, a researcher played by Marina Ruy Barbosa, who arrives at a fictional Antarctic station only to suffer sexual violence during her first night of isolation.

The story functions as a ‘whodunit’, focusing on the investigation led by sub-commander Elisabeth (Andrea Beltrão) as all men at the station become suspects. The narrative explores themes of power dynamics, trust, and the emotional isolation that follows physical confinement.

Produced by Paris Filmes in partnership with Globoplay, the project utilized advanced virtual production technology, including Unreal Engine, LED screens, and artificial intelligence. While the setting is Antarctica, the film was shot in a studio in Rio de Janeiro, with additional footage captured in Patagonia.
