AntsNature and Berlin Ökowerk showcase ants' ecological and tech impact

AntsNature and Berlin Ökowerk have launched an initiative that draws public attention to the ecological role and technological potential of ants. Ants, with an estimated 1 to 20 billion‑billion individuals worldwide and more than 16 000 species, are the most abundant land animal and have existed for about 120 million years.

These insects can carry up to forty times their own body weight, navigate using pheromones and magnetic fields, and operate in massive colonies of millions. Researchers note that studying ant behavior inspires algorithms for traffic flow, new construction materials modeled on biological glues, and antibacterial compounds that could complement existing antibiotics such as those targeting MRSA.

The project aims to turn this scientific knowledge into public outreach, highlighting how ants serve both as a model for social biology and a source of biomimetic innovation.
